TIMING

Went to the dentist
the other day
and as he prepared
me for a root canal
I checked out his new goatee.

"Growing that so your patients
won't recognize you
when you go out in public?"
I asked. Not even a smile.

A pain-filled hour later
it dawned on me
that I never did have
a good sense
of comedic timing.
