Afraid to Dance

No dance in summer's cornfields this night
Dark air cold to face and heart
You can't ever go back
And call it yours again
Once grass flourished
And life went on

In your absence
I cry out \"youth\"
Sold in search of dreams
All the while needing
New horizons
That lead full circle
To what you lack inside

Rearing a ferocious head
Which cannot be popped off
Like that of the dandelion
That when allowed to dry
To blow in to a million
Faces in the wind

Whom you look at seeking approval
Like still nested by a wing
That broke over you
Too heavy to slither out from under

The same country roads
Old trees under which you felt bliss
Ribbons and band-aid's stolen kiss
Promises made left unfulfilled
On purpose

All the while knowing
Your ship sailed without you
And you, a poor swimmer
Clinging to a branch
Without an olive

And a cast of family and a mob of friends
Feel like strangers somehow
While you long to curl up on your mother's lap
And for once not have to work for a drink
Of life

This is a night where even the cornfields
In all their glory
Stare at the night sky afraid to move
Afraid to stand still
And miss what might be
In another field
