when did the buzzing start?
and what of the ring
that used to sing
to indicate your desire
to hear my voice
is completely tone deaf

now, a buzz instead
impersonally greets-
technology at its finest
and I miss the old days
though, admit touch tones
beat rotary dial any day

your words flow
through my receiver
and I wish I were as willing
to embrace them as it is
but you're overdue at last
and I grow tired of extensions

you try to justify indifference
with excuses and words
that cannot come close
to the performance of your past
when I ran to meet your call
your technological progression

was not a friend to our love
and now what is left of you
beats around inside my head
leaving me punch drunk
with my ears ringing for truth
through the buzz of all your lies

this old phone system is tired
I think it's time that I upgrade
perhaps a mobile unit would be best
so no strings need be attached
and love can finally make the call
to your long in coming, obsolescence
