near sighted and far sighted

i always thought it odd until someone told me to think
of it another way.

that is, i always thought why call it being near sighted
when in all actuality you *can't* see far away! (and, of
course, vice versa. (prime verse?)) anyway, then this
person told me it made perfect sense 'cause near sighted
people *could* see things nearby. heh.
